3 Ways to Experience More Joy in 2025
I’m trying to make 2025 my most joyful year yet.
Not because everything is perfect (there’s a bunch of weird and terrible shit happening in the world), but because I choose to experience joy—every single day, in ways both big and small.
I no longer believe joy is something we wait for.
“After I make X dollars, THEN I will be happy.”
“After I make this deal, THEN I can relax.”
“After I win Y award, THEN I will feel fulfilled.”
(Sound familiar?)
I’ve learned that it’s something we can create (without any major life changes).
This year, I’ve made 3 intentional shifts in my daily routine that have helped me cultivate a deeper sense of joy.
Here’s what’s worked for me:
1. Make time for the things I love
I make a list of things I love to do. I try to be imaginative and uncensored. I write them down. And then I make sure I set time aside during my days to do these things – at least one or two every day.
For me, it’s things like:
Being in nature – I love the mountains, snow, and then sun
Meeting crazy, intelligent, and creative people that help me understand the world better
Listening to electronic music (and buying records)
I’ve found that when I’m busy or stressed, these are things that are neglected first. By keeping them in focus and dedicating time to them, I’ve found that I make sure this doesn’t happen as often.
Which means I spend more time doing things I love.
2. Seek unconditional joy in the present
I’ve started looking for joy in the present moment, every day. No matter what is happening, or what I’m doing.
I can always focus on the negative things, but I can also choose to focus on the positives.
And I’ve found that there are always things to feel joyful about.
I’ve typically associated joy with big moments—vacations, celebrations, milestones.
But I’m learning that real, lasting joy is found in the everyday.
Today, for example, I appreciated how blessed I am with what I'm allowed to do in my work – to see, feel, and act.
3. Take time to slow down
I take 5-7 minutes every morning and before I go to sleep to feel the joy within me – focusing on and feeling the vibrations of joy.
It isn’t some strange voodoo magic.
I just sit in my bed before and after I sleep and breathe.
Focusing on my breathing slows my monkey brain down. Then I choose to focus on the things in my life that I’m grateful for.
These 3 things are small changes in my day to day.
But I’ve found that when I’m more intentional with focusing on the things that bring me joy, day after day after day…
It starts to compound.
And joy turns into a lasting state rather than a fleeting emotion.
So, what’s one thing you’ll do today to bring more joy into your life?
